(Ian arrives home, and his ex-wife is in the living room.)

IAN MACKENZIE
Oh, mother gone up?

MARY RAMSDEN
Yes, she was tired. Nice evening?

IAN
Well, it didn't work out exactly as planned.

MARY
Oh, I'm sorry.

IAN
Do you know where you're sleeping?

MARY
Yes. I'm sorry your evening wasn't... Well, can I make you a drink or something?

IAN
Oh, no thanks. I've got to be up early in the morning.

MARY
Strange, isn't it? You and me under the same roof again. Remember our late-night routine? I locked the front door, and you locked the back...and banked that temperamental boiler.

(They both laugh at the memory.)

IAN
Yes, that boiler...hmm!

MARY
It's a pity it took me so long to grow up...because I think I have, at long last.

IAN
(not taking the bait)
Well, we'll...uh...see what can be done in the morning.

MARY
May I... May I bolt the front door as I go up?

IAN
I already have. Good night, Mary.

MARY
(frowning)
Good night.
